School board expels two students
The Mineral County Board of Education has expelled two seventh grade students who were caught using over the counter medication.
“Possession and use of prescription and over the counter drugs is a violation of our rules,” said Skip Hackworth, superintendent.
…
Hackworth said the board has zero tolerance for this abuse of the system.

School board to meet with RCB teachers in dispute over student
RCB teachers want BB guns classified as deadly weapons. Why? Because without that classification a student was recently punished with a mere 10 day suspension for having one in school. If the BB gun he had brought to school had been a deadly weapon a 12 month expulsion would have been mandatory under a state zero tolerance law.
The teachers are upset that the board unanimously voted to suspend a student for 10 days who brought a BB-gun to school and concealed it, instead of expelling the student for the year.
The board’s decision went against the recommendation of Harrison County Schools Superintendent Carl Friebel and school principal Leon Pilewski that the student be expelled for one year. The board placed the student on in-school suspension for the rest of the first semester, instead of expulsion.
“We’re concerned with the precedent that this board decision sets, and we’re also concerned with the safety of the students,” said RCB Faculty Chair Mary Beth Paletta.

10th grader in trouble over ‘Juicy’ skirt
10th grader Nichoel Hawks ran afoul of the school dress code with a skirt from the “Juicy” brand. The slogan “It’s all about Juicy” written across her butt was too much for the Raleigh County administrators.
School district officials say it could lead to sexually harassing comments from other students. Nichoel’s mother, Jennifer Hawks, notes Juicy is a brand name of an expensive line of clothing. She says officials didn’t know about the brand and made a mistake by banning her daughter’s skirt.
I think I’m going to side with the school on this one. Their reason is wrong but their action was correct. A slogan obviously meant to be interpreted as the wearer having a juicy ass isn’t appropriate for school. Their vacillating explanation was a poor attempt to deflect their own authority and pass it off as concern for the girl.
