Eleven year-old arrested for having nails at school
Rock Hill student charged after bringing nails to school
A student in the Rock Hill School District made the mistake of leaving some nails in his pocket after working on a Boy Scout project. School officials had him arrested for possession of these deadly weapons.
Dianne McCray, [6th grade] assistant principal at Rawlinson Road Middle School, asked the child Wednesday what was jingling in his pocket and the student gave her the 3.5″ long nails.
A school resource officer [Ashley Doster] arrested him. His father picked him up and he was not taken to the police station.
An effective combination of observative administrator and a cop on staff. Parents and students at this suburban middle school can breath easy knowing how quickly and effectively they eliminated the deadly hazard posed by this eleven year-old carpenter.

Once again, I have to wonder when pens and pencils are going to be considered dangerous weapons. I mean, the pen is mightier than the sword, right? Even if it isn’t more dangerous than a sword, it sure has a shaft longer than a 3-1/2″ nail, so it could stab deeper. Hope they take him out of school and homeschool him before his love of learning and self-respect is totally destroyed.
You go, Tori. Last Friday, I filed the paperwork to take my son into homeschooling. Basically, he’s a very bright kid, but also very opinionated and outspoken. He once got a 3-day suspension for calling his teacher a communist. Last week, he got a 3-day suspension for “defiance” and “disrespect” because he told his teacher and her aide that it was not appropriate for them to have a personal conversation during class-time. So, I said, to Hell with it.
I’m thinking of having him start a blog as part of his homestudy.
Cudos to you V the K. If only there were more parents like you who weren’t willing to sell out their kids’ dreams and self-respect for a convenient babysitting institution.
Keeping a blog is a great learning tool. I’m 27 and I keep several, which I think is teaching me, eventhough I don’t update them regularly.
If I ever have kids they will definitely be homeschooled.
Good for you, V! I encourage everyone who has kids to get them out of the “public schools” before it’s too late for them.
My neice was an adorable little kid, with an incredibly sweet personality (and I’m not just saying that because I’m her uncle!) Then she started going to the local government school and her personality started going right down the tubes. On top of that, she was doing very poorly, academically; she found it very difficult to read a book and didn’t even want to try.
By the time she finished 3rd grade her parents had enough, and they started homeschooling her instead. Her personality came back around, and she started taking interest in learning again. Three years later she is an avid reader - in fact, it’s hard to get her to stop!
If her parents had left her to the not-so-gentle “mercies” of the government system, she’d be well on her way to being an uneducatable lout, instead of a bright kid who is eager to learn.
Kudos to you, V the K! And Rob, Kudos to your neice’s parents. One of the reasons I read this blog is to remind myself how lucky I am to have pulled my son out of g-school before he entered 6th grade. We are finishing 7th grade. My son is a Boy Scout, too!
V, it sounds like your son was never meant for public school. It seems like he expected to be treated fairly, and when he saw the adults do something that they forbid the kids to do, he called them on it. Oh, but it’s a “do as I say, not as I do” power trip for SOME teachers (not all, thankfully, as most teachers do a good job). I’m glad you pulled him out. You’re about to embark on a wonderful journey. Email me privately if you need resources!
What is a blog? Thank you.
Blog is short for “weblog” and you’re reading one now. Generally speaking, it is a website that posts consistant content that is presented with the newest items first. There are personal weblogs, news weblogs, activist weblogs, political weblogs…pretty much anything that people have an interest in has weblogs about it.
If I ever become wealthy, I’m going to get together with some ex-special forces guys and write a book on how to kill and injure people with everyday school supply and pass it out free to as many schools as possible. I can just see an administrator going crazy when he sees how easy it is to be killed 20 different ways with a pencil. Also those chalk board erasers can be used to crush a wind pipe with one quick jab to the throat. I’m so glad I graduated in 89, I would have been expelled and in jail if I knew then what I know now.
Tell me about it, chief. With my kid, the school administrators tried to make the case that he was a violent threat because he liked to play paintball, even though he had never acted out violently in school.
This story “NAILED” it right on the head,Gov’t sponsored education is showing to be a dismal failure.
Michael, i know what you mean, and i Knew it in high school. I used one of the pens that they sold in the school store as a kubotan (restraint device, hurts like hell, but no real damage) against one of the basketball players. I told him how it could be used and he didn’t believe me. Well, he didn’t believe me for very long, at least. One good instance of the school providing weapons to it’s students.
That’s right, guys. Get your kids out of school before someone takes nails in with malicious intent. And, let’s face it, you are all as good at teaching as the professionals, so there’s no chance of your kids’ education suffering, right?
Want to know something really bad? She still has a job and she still punishes kids however inaccurate the accusation. See my blog on myspace.com
My child was just suspended and we have to attend a hearing to determine if he will be allowed back in school because he and a few other children used the tube of a ballpoint pen and some plastic pellets to “shoot” each other. They have been deemed in possession of “a dangerous weapon”. What is the world coming to? I’d love to know how the parent with the nails handled the school district. We are parents MUST take a stand to put an end to this craziness!
