Not So Pretty in Pink
Students Censured For Wearing Pink
Six students at Ensign Middle School were pulled from their class picture because they were wearing pink shirts. Principal Edward Wong was afraid that the pink shirts meant they were affiliated with “dance crews” from a local gang. These nefarious dance crews hold all-night dance contests and parties. Maybe things have changed a lot since my school days but I just don’t associate coreographed pink dancers with violent gang activity.
The boys denied being crew members and said they wore the shirts, which students described as “Easter pink,” to stand out in the photo.
More than 400 of the 1,000 seventh- and eighth-graders at the upscale school wore pink to class the following day in support of the teens. Many said they would wear pink again Friday.
They’d better be careful. Color choice in apparel seems to be a major concern for the school administration.
But Jane Garland, spokeswoman for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, said the six students were also wearing black shoes, pink-and-black armbands and pink socks.
“The color pink itself is not a problem with us. We like the color pink,” she said. “But pink and black together … are known to be party crew colors. It’s how they are worn.”
Garland said crews can be precursors to gangs. Students who wear certain color combinations are carefully watched by administrators, she said.
What color shoes do you wear with a pink shirt? Is it unusual for socks to match the shirt? If armbands aren’t allowed then have the kids take off the armbands.
Pink is okay and black is okay but if you wear them together that means you could be part of a dance troupe and dance troupes might just possibly lead to gang activity. Therefore, pink shirts with black shoes are not permitted in Newport-Mesa.
The most frightening bit about that twist of logic is that the school administrators are completely comfortable with it.

“With a capital T which rhymes with P which stands for Pool!”
The fictional antics of a con artist in a musical are now the tried-and-true policies of school administrators. I wonder what’s wrong with this picture?
Gee… there went freedom of association out the window, all on a tenuous chain of “might.” Dressing the same might be an indicator that they belong to a dance crew and dance crews might are associated with (criminal) gangs. Not, mind you, that the crews themselves engage in criminal behavior.
About the dance crews… let’s see… we have a bunch of students who work hard after school practicing dance routines and wear similar or identical clothes… Yikes! We had those when I was in school and called them “cheerleaders”! Quick! Arrest the cheerleaders before they do something criminal! But wait! There are more groups like this. Ban the band! Dump the drill-team!
Facetiousness aside, rather than trying to prevent association with a dance crew, why not copt them? Make them school clubs? Kids join groups (gangs) because they get a sense of pride in identity with the group. If you don’t like the groups they joined, then give them “better” groups to join.
