Christchurch Girls Get Fright From Zero Tolerance

Two girls were in a fistfight at Rangiora High School yesterday afternoon. A rational school would bring them in front of the principal or perhaps a vice-principal to find out why they were fighting, who was the agressor, etc. Not Rangiora.

But principal Peggy Burrows says this year the school has adopted a policy of zero tolerance to violence on the school grounds, in an effort to make it a safe place for students.

She says the police were called in to speak to the girls, something Ms Burrows says they will not forget in a hurry.

They definitely shouldn’t forget it. It is an excellent example of the abuse of scholastic authority and how to overreact to a locally handleable situation. Hopefully these girls and their community will act to get this foolish policy removed before it does serious damage to somebody.
