I am a father of three boys, living in Atlanta. Zero Tolerance policies have rubbed me the wrong way since they first started popping up in quantity in the mid 1990’s. When my eldest son approached school age those irritations changed to genuine concerns.
My dislike of these policies stems from their total lack of compassion, fairness, and attention to the details of a particular violation. They are the equivalent of creating a rule that forbids the use of common sense, precedent and intelligence.
They are typically adopted for one of two reasons: knee jerk reaction to a single incident or accumulated incidents, or a fear of prosecution if a bad decision is made. Incidents of abuse are typically defended with statements including “need to make an example of” and “if we make an exception then”. All of this is rubbish and I have started this site in an attempt to make that very clear.
My goal for this site is to create a place where people can stay informed on the many cases of zero tolerance abuses, discuss individual cases of abuse and discuss the overall problems caused by zero tolerance policies. By raising awareness of the harmful effects and abuses of the zero tolerance mindset we can start to get these terrible policies removed.
